Sometimes a poor background could ruin a good picture. If you can't seem to find the right background, try drapping some fabric over a stand. For a small child a high back chair should work. Make sure you use a color background that complements your model. I have found that a very light or a very dark background is the best.
Sometimes I use a piece of inexpensive white foam core board easily found in most craft stores.
If you are photography outside, try using a tree, bushes, or a flower bed as a background.
Inside you can use a sofa, cushion chair, a plain wall, or a fireplace for a great portrait. Having your subject sitting on a soft with a large house plant next to them works very well.
These suggestions work well when photographing the family pet also. Of course a pet or young child who will not sit still needs quite a bit of patience. With these subjects I find that having their favorite toy handy helps to relax them a bit and you can capture their true look.
