LIGHTING
My Lovely Granddaughter
I could have combined this information with the background photo, but I really wanted another picture of my granddaughter to look at, not to mention my bird.

If you only have one flash or studio light, don't worry. Position the light in front of your model, approximately one to two feet above their head, pointing down. I use a studio umbrella, but if you do not have one available try bounching or diffusing the light. After I am all set up I ask my model to hold a piece of inexpensive white foam core board on her lap at an angle so the light bounces up and illiminates shadows around the face area. This technique produces a very nice portrait.

You can use this method with a two or three light set up also. Just position the reflector where ever you see shadows.

Using this type of set-up will also help to illiminate shadows on your subject when you are photographing outdoors without a flash. If you are photographing in shade, use the reflector to bounce the sunlight back at your subject, or if your subject's face shows too many shadows, use the reflector to illiminate them.
